In short
Shopify Plus costs 6x more than Shopify. Most brands upgrade too early. Here's the framework we use to decide.
Introduction
Shopify Plus costs roughly $2,500/month vs Shopify Advanced at ~$400/month. That's $25K/year — money that could buy four months of senior creative production or a full SEO program. The upgrade is worth it for some brands. For most, it isn't yet.
When Plus is worth it
- GMV above $1M/year and growing 2x+
- You need Checkout Extensibility (custom checkout fields, scripts)
- You need B2B (wholesale channel)
- You operate Markets (multi-country, multi-currency, multi-language)
- You need Shopify Functions for custom discount logic or shipping rules
- You hit checkout API rate limits on regular Shopify
When it isn't
- Sub-$1M GMV
- Single market, single currency
- Standard checkout flow works
- You're paying for Plus features you don't use
What you actually get with Plus
Higher API rate limits, Checkout Extensibility, Shopify Functions, B2B, Markets, Launchpad, expanded staff accounts, transaction-fee discount on third-party payment gateways. That's it. Plus does not include faster servers or different ranking on Google.
Migration cost
Plan for $15K–$50K in agency work to migrate properly: checkout extensibility setup, function deployment, Markets configuration, app re-platforming. Budget another $5K–$15K for theme adjustments.
The right time
For most growing DTC brands, the right Plus upgrade window is the quarter where GMV crosses $1.2M annualized AND you have a specific Plus-only feature blocking growth. Before that, every dollar of the $25K differential is better spent on creative, paid or SEO.
We help brands decide on a quarterly basis — and we say "stay on regular Shopify" more often than not.
